Windows & Outlook Error Codes Explained — Find Your Code, Fix Your Problem

An error code looks unfriendly, but it is actually the most useful part of the error message. That short string of numbers and letters is Windows or Outlook telling you which part of the job failed — and once you know what it means, the fix is usually straightforward. This page collects every error code we have written a full guide for, in one place. Find your code in the list below, read its one-line meaning in plain English, and then open the complete step-by-step guide to fix it properly. New codes are added as their guides are published, so if your code is not here yet, check back soon — or ask us about it directly.

How to find your error code

Your code is shown in the error message itself — you do not need any special tool. In Windows Update, go to Settings > Windows Update and look under the failed update, or open Update history to see the code next to the update that failed. In Outlook, the code appears in the Send/Receive error box, usually on the Errors tab of the Send/Receive progress window, in brackets after the message text. Codes start with “0x” — copy the whole string exactly, including any letters, when you search this page.
